Commercial Market Report
Families: John Hollman
½ White Dorper ½ Romanov Ewes with lambs: $300 to $585 per family.
Josh Kaster/R&K Ranch
High Percentage Dorper Ewes with Dorper lambs sold at $360-660 per family.
B&R Family Farms
Cross Bred Ewes w/lambs brought $300 to $485 per family.
We were lucky to have a very good offering of families. We started the sale off with the John Hollman consignment of ½ White Dorper and ½ Romanov blood lines. We were hoping that these families would set the tone for the sale and did they ever!. The first five families were yearling with singles and twins bringing $350 to $525 per family. Then had 5 sets of aged ewes that brought $360 to $585. The next families we had to offer came from B&R Family Farms. These were very nice cross bred ewes with a frisien blood line. These ewes were from two years to running age and brought $300 to $480 per family. The next families came from Josh Kaster/R&K Ranch. These ewes were Dorper cross ewes with Dorper lambs. They brought $360-$660 with the family at $660 being high selling family of the day. We did have some additional families throughout the sale with some great lambs at side. The market on families held strong all day long. IN total we were able to offer 34 families of sheep with an average sale price of $382.00
Bred Ewes: The market was very good for bred ewes as well. Quality bred ewes were in high demand. Commercial black head Dorper ewes went for $400-$565 bred to full blooded Dorper rams. We had a nice offering of ¾ white Dorper ¼ Romanov bred coming yearlings from Pleasant View Farms for $350-$390 per head. Quality cross bred ewes ran $240-$400 per head for the majority of the sale.
Ewe Lambs: The market demand for quality replacement ewe lambs was hot to say the least. We had a very nice offering of ewe lambs. One of the top sets was Blake Bierman’s easy care ewe lambs that brought $270 at 80 lb. average. The top selling set of ewe lambs came from Josh Kaster/R&K Ranch. These were black headed Dorpers that went for $380 at a 79 lb. average. Ewe Lambs were steady at $3.50 to $4.00 per pound for take home replacements, which is amazing considering the drop in lamb prices the week of the sale down to the mid $2.00 per lb. range.
Rams: The demand was very strong early into the sale for quality replacement rams as noted by the registered ram from $1,000 to $1,700. The commercial market was not as strong but still seen rams reach $500 per head. We had Dorpers, White Dorper, White Dorper/Romanov, Katahdin and Easy Care rams of top quality and genetics. The market just seemed to get overloaded toward the end of the sale and some rams ere sold well below their value, especially the easy care rams.
Overview: This was by far the best sale to date for the Mid-States Hair Sheep including quality and prices. We want to thank all the consignors and buyers that came out and spent the day with us. We strive to continue offering top quality stock to the Midwest producers as we continue to grow our flock and our sale. See everyone September 25th, 2021!
